myLot Discussions| Who love's Fergie? | | I love Fergie, Every time she has a show or concert, I really find away to watch her in the television with her band "BLackEyed Peas ".specially her song "CLUMPSY"
| | Writing band scores | | I have written some pieces that are arranged for concert band, but I have no idea how music publishers work, whether it works the same as book publishers. Does any one have any ideas? | |
| | What do you charge for lessons? | | I want to start offering private clarinet lessons, but I don't know what to charge. My experience: I was in band in school from 5-12th grade, including all-state honor band in 11 and 12. In college I played in the marching band as well as the concert band, and was first chair in both. After college, I played in the community concert band for 4 years. So I have 14 years of concert experience. The downside is, I have not played in any kind of band for over 5 years. However, I have kept up the practicing, and am pretty sure I could teach beginning clarinet lessons. What do you think? | |
| | What extra-curricular activities did you participate in when you were in school? | | I've already posted a discussion about extra-curricular activities for your kids. This discussion is about you. When I was in elementary school, there were definitely not as many of these activities available to school students. I took some piano lessons for awhile but this was not school related. In Middle School (Junior High) I was involved in girls softball for a few years and I played the alto sax in the concert band. I never got into any major school sports. In High School I was in concert and Marching bands. Yes, I was a band nerd![em]thumbup[/em]. Band was a great experience for me. We learned how important each member was to the group. It was also the place where I met my best friends at the time. Band is full of really great, well behaved, and interesting kids. I LOVED those years. How about you? What were your activities? Did they help you in your future adult years? Did you have the tremendously exhausting schedule that kids today seem to have? Did your parents push you too hard? Did you do what THEY wanted you to to, or was it something you genuinely loved? | |
| | Any classical music buffs or band geeks here? | | I am a proud former band geek, having played the flute and french horn in both marching and concert band:)I am racking my brain to think of the name of a song we played 10 years ago...I want to say it was something like "for eleanor" or emily, or emma, - i know it wasn't the famous "fur elise", lol. This song was real dreary, kind of like something for a funeral or rainy day...I really liked it, but for the life of me don't remember what it was and of course don't still have the sheet music laying around from back then! I hate it when I have something right on the tip of my tongue but for the life of me can't remember what it's called. If you have any suggestions on what it might be - and I could be completely wrong about the title I would greatly appreciate it!And if you don't know what it is, that's okay too - you can share with me what classical music you like or your own band geek experiences:) | |

Miss Widget, The Dallas Wind Symphony's office cat, snuggles into a house designed as part of a renovation at the DWS offices.
Cats and music are a natural combination. (Think about it – ever heard of Dogs, the Broadway musical?) And an animal behaviorist at the Veterinary University of Vienna who studied cats and music has even said they prefer male-voice choirs, double bass and oboe. So it's no surprise that there would be an official mascot and office cat at the Dallas Wind Symphony. She is the lovely Miss Widget.
The industrious black shorthair, who describes herself as "svelte, ebony-hued, with a sleek coat, of American ancestry," according to DWS founder and executive director Kim Campbell, resides full time in the DWS headquarters in the Fair Park Bandshell.
Miss Widget has spent the past few months overseeing a design overhaul of the historic space. It's a collaborative effort between design students from the Art Institute of Dallas, the American...
| | The Father Dennis, a University Professor | | Most boys like to play sports with their friends after school. As a young boy, Dennis learned how to play basketball, American football, Chinese football (Soccer), and softball (American basketball for children). At school, he was also asked if he would like to play in the band. Soon, music became more important to him than sports. He could also sing, so he joined the high school choir and there he saw for the first time a piano player he could not forget. Her name was Janet. She invited him to her house to play table tennis and the two of them became friends. They didn't know it then, but many years later, their friendship would become very strong and they would marry. When an American football game was played, the high school band always performed. The football players would take a rest at the half or mid-point of the game. The concert band would come onto the football field, marching and playing music. They would make different forms on the field. They always made a large alphabet letter at the end of this half time show. It was the capital letter that stood for the name of their high school. For Dennis, it was the letter R for Rogers High School. In college, he... | |
