Marching band is often associated with a group of trained people marching outdoor and playing several songs using some musical instruments. The instruments that they use during this outdoor performance can be classified based on their types and how to play them. In general, we can classify those instruments into brass instruments and percussions instruments. The brass instruments usually include trumpets, clarinets, flutes and trombones whereas the percussion instruments normally consist of bass drums and snare drums. A brief description of those instruments can be seen as follows.
The Brass Instruments
The brass instruments are usually played by several players in the line. The sound is produced by blowing these instruments and it is very common to hear these brass instruments such as trumpets, clarinets, flutes or trombones played in the key of Bb or F.
* Trumpets
In the past, most trumpets were made of shells. Several years later, people were able to make these instruments of silver or bronze. Trumpets usually only have three buttons and therefore the players have to adjust the embouchure to produce the correct pitch during the performance.
* Clarinets
Clarinets are small brass instruments which actually belong to the woodwind group. These instruments are usually made of metal. There are several clarinets that we can normally find such as Soprano Clarinet, Piccolo Clarinet, Basset Clarinet, Basset Horn, Alto Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Contra-alto Clarinet and Contrabass Clarinet.
* Flutes
Flutes are also brass instruments belong to the woodwind group. The most common flutes are usually made of silver or gold although it is also common to find these instruments made of the mixture of silver and gold. They can produce a soft and harmonious sound and they can be played together with other instruments very well.
* Trombones
The other brass instruments usually used in the marching band are trombones. Trombones are also made of metal. The word trombone is actually from the Italian words "tromba" which means trumpet and the ending "one" which means "big". Literally, trombone means "big trumpet".
The Percussion Instruments
The percussion instruments are instruments that can produce a vibrating sound whenever a player hit, rub or shake them. Similar to the brass instruments, the percussion instruments are also played by a group of players in the line. The players are usually called the drumline or battery. The most common instruments in this category are bass drums and snare drums.
* Bass Drums
Bass Drums are usually big with the diameter of 14". They are played by hitting both the left and the right side membranes. The membranes are usually made of a soft and white PET film. In general, a drumline plays 4 to 6 different sizes of drum bass and one drum bass is played by a drummer.
* Snare Drums
Snare drums usually have deeper dimension. This dimension makes them produce louder sounds and therefore they are good to be used in the open field. The normal sizes (diameter x depth) are 13 x 11" and 14 x 12" whereas the smaller size is measured at 13 x 9".
